Should I use this water with my Neti Pot?

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

I’ve recently started using a Neti Pot, just in the past couple days. I’ve been using it at home while here for Thanksgiving Break. I’m going back to college on Sunday.

There is a difference between the tap water here and at school. At school I think there are a lot of minerals in the water; when I boil water in my electric kettle I frequently get crusty buildups on the metal on the bottom. And I get chalky residues on glassware if there was a little water at the bottom and I let it evaporate. At home none of this happens. I drink filtered water at school from a Brita I keep in my fridge.

Would it be safe to use that tap water when I go to the bathroom to use my Neti Pot? Or should I microwave filtered water? Or should I buy bottled water for use in my nasal cavities?

Is it a good idea to boil tap water in Cuba, let it cool down and use for washing face & rinsing mouth?

    Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

Heading to cuba for the first time and I’m not getting any of the shots/vaccines. I don’t want traveller’s diaherra tho!

So being careful, I’m considering bringing a small plug in kettle and boil tap water in the room to use during my trip… using that water for washing face & rinsing in the morning… This can save me a couple of bucks from buying bottle water…

So, is it a good idea? Effective?

Once the water is boiled but cool down… are the bacteria still dead or only when its super hot…
Is it safe to drink like bottled water or not?

    Thanks!

In the bottom of my kettle there is stainless steel covering the element. Over time, a brown, sticky hard substance has covered it which I know is not limescale. Bits of it break off and get into drinks etc. Does anyone know what this is and how to get rid of it. Also, my steam iron spits out dirty water from time to time. I think both problems are obviously caused by the tap water.

Do I need to descale my kettle?

      Sunday, July 18th, 2010

I’ve noticed that water left in the kettle overnight will turn brown by morning, even though my tap water and water that’s freshly boiled are clear. I’ve only had this kettle a few months, the old one never turned the water brown. Is this normal? I’ve heard people mention that kettles should be descaled- will that help? Any ideas/advice? Thanks!
Thanks, but it’s a normal metal kettle, not electric- no filter and no way to open it up.
